GHS Bell Schedules Set to Change for 2019-2020 School Year... What are the Options?

As GHS faculty and administration begin discussion regarding the possible change in schedule for the 2019-2020 school year, current freshmen through juniors could see a stark contrast in class schedules.

The general topic of the modifications is not new, as Glendora High School must restudy the schedule every few years.

There are two new schedules being deliberated over, in addition to the current timetable and a regular traditional schedule still being an option to occur every Monday. One key difference in two of the proposed schedules allots collaboration time for teachers in and between the varying departments.

Principal Paul Lopez took the time to state, “We can put together activities for teachers to work together on moving the school forwards.”

Collaboration with Traditional Schedule

Collaboration 8:00 a.m. - 9:14 a.m. (76)

1st Period 9:14 a.m. - 9:55 a.m. (41)

2nd Period 10:02 a.m. - 10:43 a.m. (41)

Nutrition 10:43 a.m. - 10:53 a.m. (10)

3rd Period 11:00 a.m. - 11:46 a.m. (46)

4th Period 11:53 a.m. - 12:34 p.m. (41)

Lunch 12:34 p.m. - 1:04 p.m. (30)

5th period 1:11 p.m. - 1:52 p.m. (41)

6th Period 1:59 p.m. - 2:40 p.m. (41)

Collaboration with Block Schedule

Collaboration 8:00 a.m. - 9:14 a.m. (76)

1st/2nd Period 9:14 a.m. - 10:43 a.m. (89)

Nutrition 10:43 a.m. - 10:53 a.m. (10)

3rd/ 4th Period 11:00 a.m. - 12:34 p.m. (94)

Lunch 12:34 p.m. - 1:04 p.m. (30)

5th/6th Period 1:11 p.m. - 2:40 p.m. (89)

In regards to students who have a 0 period, it may seem detrimental as they would be losing about 230 minutes a month of class time. However, during the process of creating the collaborative schedule, teachers who did teach that specific period were consulted and they were not upset.

With the way that the current schedule functions, 0 period receives more time weekly than the regular 100 minute periods. Thus, the cut would not put 0 period at risk.

As of now, a concrete decision is yet to be determined. This past week, the teachers met to vote upon either a collaborative block or the current block schedule, with the former moving onto the next round.

This upcoming Monday and Tuesday will be the final stage, where collaborative block will be pitted against a traditional schedule. GHS students should have their results by the end of the day Tuesday.
