From the 2000s, Team Edward versus Team Jacob, to the late 2020s, Team Conrad (Definity) versus Team Jeremiah, the romance trope of love triangles has continued strongly. Yet, the question remains: has it been overdone? Well, the romance trope of love triangles is still much needed.
Let’s be honest, Everyone loves a little bit of drama. That’s why everyone is interested in celebrities, such as the turmoil between Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and Hailey Bieber, or Princess Diana, Prince Charles, and Camilla. Plus, it’s so much fun to debate with your friends on whether or not they are team Steve or team Jonathan. (from the hit Netflix series Stranger Things)
I understand that many people consider this trope to be toxic since one individual from this triangle ends up heartbroken. Also, there are some instances in romance movies where some of the main characters reject one of the sweetest and best love interests, like in To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Poor John Ambrose. One more would be Lon Hammond from the Notebook, rich, nice, and attractive, yet Allie still rejected him after he loved her.
But in general, the trope of love triangles teaches us about life in a way of understanding that there are many good people out there, yet somehow we always end up hurting someone when it comes to who we truly want to be with, but we learn that’s just life. We all end up being Katniss Everdeen at some point, trying to balance our obligations and our romantic relationships with Peeta and Gale, which ends up getting us in trouble.
