For Choir President Natalia Ortega, choir is more than performing; it's about teamwork, dedication, and connection.  From months of rehearsals to exciting competition trips, Natalia says the supportive environment helps students grow as performers while creating lasting memories along the way.

Q: What does a typical choir competition look like?

A: We start competitions in February and start prepping in November.  We prepare 20 minutes for dancing and singing.  On comp day we are there until really late at night and do awards and it’s a really fun way to get to know everybody.

Q: How does the choir prepare in the weeks leading up to a big performance or competition?

A: We usually have extra rehearsals like tech rehearsal and everything like our lighting and run our whole show and cramming last minute singing.

Q: What qualities make someone a strong member of choir, beyond just singing ability?

A: A lot of being able to work with each other; you need to be able to work with  team and have good interactions with each other.

Q: Can you describe a memorable moment or highlight from this year in choir?

A: Our final competition was a really fun one.  We went all the way to the oceanside, some of us spent the night and it was just really fun!

Q: How do you balance the technical side of singing with expressing emotion and storytelling in performances?

A: You need to be able to convey a story to the audience while sounding good because it's a choir.  Have your music down like muscle memory to focus more on expression onstage.

Q: What advice would you give to students who are thinking about joining choir and might feel intimidated?

A: We are all very supportive including the teachers.  We are all here to support you.  We are all in the same boat trying new things and putting ourselves out there!
